In this article series we shall consider the topic: building a lasting relationship in marriage. Indeed we want to appreciate God for helping us thus far and also giving all readers a teachable heart.
NLT Bible. Proverbs 24:3-4
A house is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense.Through knowledge its rooms are filled with all sorts of precious riches and valuables.
NLT Bible. Song of Songs 4:10
Your love delights me, my treasure, my bride. Your love is better than wine, your perfume more fragrant than spices.
NLT Bible. Ecclesiastes 4:9-11
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone?
It’s important to know how to have such a lasting relationship since everyone desires is to have a beautiful home. This vital point shouldn’t be taken for granted because If you don’t marry the person God ordained for you. Then, having a lasting relationship in your marriage is impossible. That’s why in next series, we will take a critical look at finding the will of God in marriage. Hope to see your contributions and comments.
Now let’s consider the verses above. The book of Proverbs cited above established that there are three things we need in marriage to succeed so that our relationship(s) stands the test of time. They are,
- Understanding, and
It’s very obvious that many of us don’t know the meaning of these virtues. Let me define them;
- Knowledge is the acquisition of information.
- Wisdom is the intelligent application of knowledge.
- Understanding means the appreciation of revealed truth
These three virtues all perform different functions. For by wisdom a family is built, by understanding the family is established and by knowledge the home or family is filled with all good things. If these three vitrues are missing then you can not have a lasting relationship in marriage. God never intended that our marriages should be brief that’s why we must cry to God to grant us and our partners these three vitrues. However, there are many people who parade themselves without these three virtues. If they don’t have these qualities I doubt if they can have a long lasting relationship that’s why I tell people not to marry only beauty or handsomeness without these three vitrues. That’s a food for thought.
In Africa, we denounce divorce and also God condemns it. My prayer for you is that you will have a long lasting relationship in your marriage.
There are things we must consider if we want to attain a long lasting relationship in our marriage.
Firstly, there must be mutual co-existence because you cannot live alone in marriage. You must live together.
There are people who are married but they are lonely. Two is better than one in marriage. That’s why you don’t use the word “I” in marriage. It’s” we”. For one will chase a thousand but two will chase ten thousands. That’s why if you know you cannot stay with that person don’t even accept to marry him or her.
You don’t manage anybody in marriage.
Marriage is for life and you don’t change partner like clothes. It’s one forever so don’t allow anyone talk you into marrying anyone. You must decide by yourself.
Secondly, you must take your partner as your best friend for life. Don’t see your partner as a contractor rather see him or her as your lover for life. Let him or her live in your memory.
Learn to cherish him or her.
Let me ask you this question. How do you feel when you meet love at first sight?
I guess your heart beats one thousand times in a minute. That is how it’s supposed to be for life. You must not allow the fire to quench. In Genesis 26:8, please read this with different translations.
Isaac could not keep his sight and heart away from Rebecca.
Do you miss your partner dearly? Or are you the type that want his or absence?
The plan of God for marriage is that it should grow stronger on daily basis. The aosis of your love should never run dry.
Thirdly, you must drink from the well of love. Once there is love, you can never get tired of your partner. Love is a word that has been greatly abused.
NLT Bible. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proudor rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Love is patient, kind and not jealous. Let me know yours via the comment box.
Objectively, It’s noticed from this verse that Money wasn’t mentioned meaning that having billions or trillions of Naira’s can’t gruantee a long lasting relationship in marriage because where there is no love, money can’t measure up.
May God bless you and your relationship. Stay tuned for more series.
